Uldene was my aunt - my mom's oldest sister and I wanted to add a memorial for my beautiful aunt before someone who searches through obituaries added her - like someone did with my mom's death in December (he added the memorial the day after she died while we were grieving and at the funeral home).

I'm adding a memorial because I love Aunt Uldene - not because she's a number.

First I want to tell you about Aunt Uldene. She was truly a sweetie - always seemed to be smiling and happy although life was not always easy for her. When she'd get together with my mom and their two sisters and brother, they'd laugh and talk, talk, talk! No one could get a word in edgewise. Aunt Uldene had such a gentle nature about her; she was just an honest-to-goodness good person - such is to be expected from someone who also loved dogs.

Aunt Uldene loved to wear pastel colors - blues, pinks, greens, yellows and she loved to wear floral patterns. It seems she either had floral in her blouses or a scarf and she'd wear the most beautiful colors of slacks. Her family chose a soft yellow for her memorial card and it was the perfect choice for Aunt Uldene.

We will all miss her so much as she was much loved.

Uldene Laurel Beebe was born on January 15, 1926 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan and died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 in Flint. She died at home surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

She was the daughter of William Beebe (1900-1962) and Gladys Louella Lincoln (1900-1935). Her mother, Gladys, had been married once before she married William so Uldene had half-siblings as well as full siblings:

Uldene's half-siblings were:

Melvin Sherman Edwards (her half brother by her mother's first marriage to William Edwards). Melvin was born 18 Nov 1922 in Flint and died on 1 Jan 1978 in Oscoda, Iosco, Michigan. Three other half siblings died as infants: Lloyd Llewenlyn Edwards (1919-1919), Evan Christopher Edwards (1921-1921), and Ivan William Edwards (1921-1921) - Evan and Ivan were twins - one died at birth and one at one day old.

Uldene also had four full siblings:

Fredrick Ellsworth (1924-2008), Junia (1927-2012), Goldie Louise (1929-1978) and Virgin Ione 'Virgie' (1932-2016)

In 1930, the Beebe family was living in Thetford Township, Genesee County, Michigan and in 1940 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan as found on census records. However, we don't believe Uldene or her sisters were actually living with their father in 1940.

About six months her mother died in December 1935, her brother Fred got into some trouble. This brought the attention of Social Services to the family. Social Services visited their home and felt that the little girls were not being adequately taken care of - this despite the fact that their father had hired a part-time housekeeper who also looked after the little girls.

Social Services decided to take the four little girls - Uldene, Junia, Goldie and Virgie - and placed them into Whaley House which was a 'detention' home but more like an orphanage. They remained there for about eight months when the girls were "released" from Whaley House. Uldene went to live with her Aunt Minnie (Lincoln) Schebella; Minnie was a younger sister of Uldene's mom Gladys. From what we've been told, once the little girls were taken away from their father, they never lived with him again. Her half-brother Melvin had gone back to live with his biological father and her brother Fred had gone to live with an uncle, Elmer Beebe - a brother to Uldene's father William.

On January 15, 1944, Uldene married Kenneth Calvin Simpson in Genesee County, Michigan. They had one son together even though their marriage only lasted six months.

I'm not quite sure how this all worked out, but following her divorce from Kenneth, Uldene moved in with her sister Junia in a boarding house which is how they met their future husbands (I know that Uldene and June lived together for a time in a boarding house in Flint). Given Junia's age, I'm guessing they roomed together after Uldene and Kenneth were divorced.

Sometime about September 1947, Uldene, Curt [Fish], Junia and her husband all moved to Chicago where they once again lived in boarding houses. Uldene lived with Junia and her husband. Uldene and Junia worked as telephone operators and at a TV factory. Curt worked in construction while living in Chicago.

Uldene and Curt Fish (1924-2008) married on April 4, 1949 in Piggot, Clay County, Arkansas. Since Uldene was from Michigan, Curt from Missouri and both had been living in Chicago, I'm not sure why they got married in Arkansas. Someone told me once, but I forget.

Uldene and Curt moved back to Flint, Michigan sometime before the end of 1950 where they continued to live the rest of their lives where they raised their son and daughters. They had four daughters and have numerous grandchildren.

The main thing to know about Aunt Uldene is this - she was one of the most beautiful women I have ever been blessed to know - both inside and out.

Obituary [I took out names of living persons]

FISH, ULDENE LAUREL

Uldene passed away peacefully at home, on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Services will be 1:00PM, Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Sharp Funeral Home, 6063 Fenton Rd. Flint. Uldene's grandson, Pastor Adam Arnould will officiate. Visitation will be Friday, March 29, from 1-8pm, and one hour before services.

Uldene was born in Flint, MI, on January 15, 1926, to William and Gladys (Lincoln) Beebe. She endured a very tough childhood, being deprived of many things, due to The Great Depression, and the loss of her mother, six weeks before Uldene's tenth birthday. She also had two older brothers, and three younger sisters, all born within a nine year span. Her father worked at any job he could find.

At age 23, she married Curtis L. Fish, April 4, 1949, in Piggot, AR. They lived mostly in the Flint area, raising a son, and four daughters. Uldene was a kind and gentle woman, who truly enjoyed visiting with her whole family, as witnessed by the many family gatherings and reunions she attended. Everyone enjoyed all her great cooking, and the many delicious desserts she made. But, her PIES were the greatest. She perfected the art of making the pastry that was the basis for her superb fruit cobblers; cinnamon rolls; fried pies; and the many other kinds of pies she made. Most everyone agrees that her pastry was the best they ever ate.

Unfortunately, Uldene had a stroke in 2004, which then required full care for her. This was given by her husband, Curtis, until his death January 7, 2008. Then, youngest daughter along with her husband, Ken, and their four children lovingly took over her everyday care.

Uldene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Melvin and Fredrick; sisters Junia [Linn] and Goldie [Heinkel]; her grandson Richard Simpson; and her son-in-law Ken Howerton. Uldene is survived by sister, Virgin; her son and four daughters; 15 grandchildren; plus great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
