PLEASANT VIEW, Utah -- Peary Bliss Barker passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2001 in LaVerkin, Utah.
He was born January 17, 1911 in Pleasant View, the 10th of 11 children born to LeRoy and Mary Ann Cragun Barker. He lived all of his life in the house he was born in, except for the first nine years of his marriage.
Peary married Jenness Viola Wright on May 12, 1932 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were married nearly 67 years at the time Jenness died on February 21, 1999.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he was a High Priest, and served in many capacities within the church.
Peary founded and operated Fire Protection Service Corp., a highly successful fire alarm business that evolved into subsidiaries. Prior to that, he owned and operated the Milky-Way Dairy, and was also a painting contractor.
He was a Registered Scouter for over 60 years, serving as Scout Master, Scout Commissioner, and in various other positions. He also served four different terms as the Mayor of Pleasant View City, and never missed a council meeting in 16 years. He loved his community and worked actively to protect it and maintain its beauty.
In his retirement years Peary raised wonderful vegetable gardens, giving freely to family, friends, neighbors and widows in the community. He was especially known for the carrots and parsnips he grew. His love for his family is eternal. He and Jenness left their posterity the legacy of the Barker Family Park to enjoy and encourage family get-togethers. He spent numerous hours taking care of this property.
Peary is survived by four sons and three daughters, Kenton (Georgia) Barker, and Sanford (DeAnna) Barker, both of St. George; Sherman (Linda) Barker, and Mary Ann (Rodney) Garner, both of Pleasant View; LaMonte (Laura) Barker, North Ogden; Cherie (Keith) Wayment, Rupert, Idaho; and Shanna (Kimball) Vaughn, Hooper. He leaves a proud heritage of 43 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, six sisters, and his beloved daughter-in law, Kimi Barker.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Rolene Gerber and Denise Holladay at the Mesa View House Toquerville, for their kind and loving care.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant View 7th Ward Chapel, 2975 North 1000 West.
Friends may call at Lindquist's North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd., on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the Ward Chapel from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, North Ogden Cemetery.
