Mary Theresa "Terrie" (Ladd) Kyc, 87, passed from this world peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, surrounded by her family at her home in South Windsor.

Terrie was born on May 15, 1926, in Willimantic to the late Daniel and Delena (Beaudry) Ladd. She was educated at St. Mary School in Willimantic and was a member of St. Mary Parish. On Oct. 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to Joseph M. Kyc and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 2009. The couple made their home in South Windsor, and their love and devotion was apparent to all who knew them. Terrie retired from Veeder-Root after 35 years and dedicated the rest of her life to community service. In the 1970s she served as an ambassador for the Friendship Force, traveling to Russia, Austria, and Hungary and in turn she graciously hosted fellow ambassadors. Recounts of Terrie's travels would delight friends and family for many years. Terrie volunteered as a docent and volunteer coordinator at the Old State House in Hartford and was fortunate to see the building through its bicentennial celebration. Terrie was always passionate about Connecticut history, especially in the City of Hartford, where she worked to preserve landmarks including the Isham Terry House through her role at the Antiquation and Landmark Society. Terrie was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was able to trace her lineage to Revolutionary War patriot Daniel Ladd. In 1994, the Connecticut General Assembly honored her with a Community Service Award for her contributions to the Martha Pitkin Wolcott Chapter of the DAR. She diligently served as house chairwoman for the Oliver Ellsworth Memorial Association, and her great-grandchildren will forever remember Saturdays spent at the Oliver Ellsworth Homestead. Terrie was also an active member of the Colonial Dames and Wednesday Afternoon Club, where she enjoyed socializing with her many friends.

Terrie had an avid interest in politics and was strongly committed to the Democratic Party, whom she spent countless hours volunteering for. Terrie enthusiastically campaigned for her friend Barbara Kennelly throughout her career and hosted events on her behalf. Terrie served as president of the Democratic Women's Club and in 1984 she was recognized for her tireless efforts and unselfish duties on behalf of the organization by the Connecticut General Assembly. Terrie was a strong advocate for community service, and she served the town of South Windsor well as a member of the Patriotic Commission, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Wood Memorial Library, and a lifetime member of the Historical Society. Beginning in 1996, Terrie served proudly as South Windsor's town historian. One of her greatest honors was receiving the Eugene Policelli Service Award in recognition of her tireless service to the community in 2005.

To her family, Terrie will be remembered as Mom, Mare, and Meme.

She leaves behind her two devoted children, Joyce Cormier and her husband, Stephen, of South Windsor and Michael Kyc and his wife, Linda, of Tolland; her beloved grandchildren, David Delusso and his wife, Michelle, Valarie Bogoslofski and her husband, Matthew, Rebekah Robbins and her husband, Dale, all of South Windsor, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Abraham Kyc of Fayetteville, N.C., Jeremy Piela of Hamden, and Jonathan Piela and his wife, Sarah, of Tolland; her adoring greatgrandchildren, Delena, Lindsay, Jacob, Brian, Hailey, Dylan, Alyssa, Joey, Colin, Noah, and Ava; and many special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Kyc, and her brother, Alvin Ladd.

Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, 10 a.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 673 Ellington Road, South Windsor. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, South Windsor.

Terrie's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Masonicare Home Health and Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza, Suite 200, East Hartford, CT 06108.
