Mahala Ann Rebecca Matthews was born in Mississippi in 1833. She came to Utah in a wagon owned by her father in October, 1848. Mahala Ann was courted by John Daniel I-Iolladay Jr., while she was driving her father*s wagon, and John was on his horse. They were married beside a campfire in Holladay, Utah, surrounded by their loving families. This was in November, 1848.
In 1851, John and Mahala Ann were called to go to San Bernardino to settle. In 1857, they were asked to return to Utah because of Johnston*s Army coming into the Salt Lake Valley.
They went first to Spring Hill, and then to Saritaquin, Utah, where they made their home the rest of their lives. Mahala Ann was the mother of twelve children. She passed away in Santaquin in 1916; her husband died in 1909.
