Ruth M. (Powell) Sands was b. east of Traer, Tama Co., IA, the last daughter of the pioneer family of Robert and Sophia (Tornow) Powell who came to Tama Co. in a covered wagon in 1870. She received her high school education in Traer, graduating in the class of 1909. Ruth attended Cedar Rapids business college and received a B.A. degree from State University of Iowa in 1922, majoring in sociology. She worked on her Masters degree at State University of Iowa and also University of Chicago.

Ruth served as an elementary school teacher, a secretary for Thomas and Thomas law firm in Traer, and as a secretary for the history department at the State University of Iowa. She then became involved in social work in Chicago, IL, for the United Charities of Chicago and the University of Chicago.

In November 1934, she married Daniel Sands and later moved to Sioux City, IA where she was involved as a Travelers Aide for the USO during World War II.

Ruth retired to the family home at Traer in 1953 and was an active member of the Ripley United Church of Christ and the ladies organization of that church. She was a former member of the Alpha Club and Garden Club.

Ruth Powell was my 1st cousin.
