Ruth served as an elementary school teacher, a secretary for Thomas and Thomas law firm in Traer, and as a secretary for the history department at the State University of Iowa. She then became involved in social work in Chicago, IL, for the United Charities of Chicago and the University of Chicago.
In November 1934, she married Daniel Sands and later moved to Sioux City, IA where she was involved as a Travelers Aide for the USO during World War II.
Ruth retired to the family home at Traer in 1953 and was an active member of the Ripley United Church of Christ and the ladies organization of that church. She was a former member of the Alpha Club and Garden Club.
