Israel, son of Yankel Buxbaum, was born in the Galicia province of Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine). He served in the Austro-Hungarian army as a Zugsführer (Sergeant) and worked as an overseer on a large estate.
In 1903, Israel immigrated to the United States with his wife and six of his nine children, the others having arrived earlier. They settled in Manhattan where Israel worked as a tailor-tanner and/or furrier.
Israel died of kidney cancer and was survived by his wife and ten children.
(Note: Certain documents suggest that Israel Buxbaum was actually born in 1863.)
