BENJAMIN VANDYKE BLOOMER was the second of nine children born to JOSEPH BLOOMER (1817 Adams Co., Ohio - 1890 Wabash Co., Indiana) and PHEBE ELIZABETH VANDYKE BLOOMER Bloomer (1819 Delaware - 1903 Wabash Co., Indiana) who were married 11 Jan 1840 in Fayette Co., Ohio. The Bloomer family, with 3 young children, removed to Wabash Co., Indiana in 1845 and settled on the Wood's property located in Waltz Township. Over the next 15 years, the family progressively grew and prospered; six more children were born. All nine children were well educated in the schools of that day, four becoming teachers of some note.

Benjamin's eight siblings were: Mary Catherine (Mrs. John) Neff (1841-1895), Elijah Overman Bloomer (1845-1924), Francena Jane (Mrs. John) Harper (1847-1920), John Francis Bloomer (1850-1898), Abigail Ann (Mrs. Joseph) Hackney (1852-1878), George Ellis Bloomer (1855-1846), Phebe Ellen (Mrs. Levi) Teeter (1859-1940) and Clara Emma (Mrs. Rev. Orin) Depuy (1864-1934).

Benjamin never married but had he lived he would have enjoyed relationships with the 39 nieces and nephews born to his siblings.

From the autobiography of his brother, GEORGE ELLIS BLOOMER (1855-1946): "[My] oldest brother, BENJAMIN VANDYKE BLOOMER, enlisted in the 47th Regiment, Company B, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, in 1861, and on December 22, 1862 died at Helena, Arkansas. His body was taken after the war over to Vicksburg, Mississippi, in the National Cemetery, and buried in that place."
