William Robert Bennett, age 61, prominent Elkhart farmer and citizen died at his home early Wednesday afternoon after an illness of about two weeks.
Funeral services were scheduled to be held at the Pilgrim Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. P.E. Weisinger conducting the obsequies.
Mr. Bennett was born here, the son of Richard and Luanna Gauntt Bennett, and lived in this section all of his life. He was a prominent leader in the Pilgrim Baptist Church and served as trustee of the Elkhart Public School for the past fourteen years.
By the passing of Mr. Bennett's death, Elkhart loses one of its most faithful and loyal citizens, a man who was always ready to help keep his community in progressive channels. He possessed a willingness in all civic affairs, was a great help to others and his life's work here on Earth was well and faithfully done. His parting from among our citizenship brings deep feelings of sorrow to many and a lamentable event to the entire community.
As a useful citizen and public spirited servant of his home town and surrounding community this man has rendered excellent work that will be long remembered and respected by the citizenship of Elkhart and the surrounding community.
Deceased is survived by his wife, Iciphenia Kennedy Bennett; three sons, Elwin of North Platt, Neb., Eldridge, and Odell, both of Elkhart; five daughters, Mrs. Junilu Rosson of Palestine, Mrs. Adelle Trigg, Lula, Doris, and Dorris of Elkhart; his father Richard Bennett of Elkhart; four brothers, Grover Cleveland, and Stephen of Elkhart, and Raymond, and George, both of Houston; five sisters, Mrs. Obie (Emma) Taylor of Elkhart, Mrs. Burton (Fannie Maude) Cogdell, and Mrs. Will (Cynthia) Shaufner of Houston, and Mrs. Will (Myrtle) Northcutt of Commanche, Texas.
