He was the son of Joseph and Ann Sims. He was married to Sarah Hopkins and had at least two children Alexander Wooddrop Sims (d. 1799) and Elizabeth Howard Sims Shippen (1793-April 6, 1860). His death was mentioned in Elizabeth Drinker's notable diary:

1793, 29 August
"John Morgan, who married Smith's daughter, Woodrop Sims, one Lumbert, and Vanuxem's daughter, one of the name of Duncan, and many whose names we did not hear, have died since yesterday."
