Married by the Rev. John Bachman on the 4th of January 1828.

He was an instrument maker and music publisher who founded the Siegling Music House of Charleston in 1819. The company at one point had a branch in Havana, Cuba known as Siegling & Valotte. The business finally closed in 1970.

Johann Zacharias Siegling, was born in 1791 in Erfurt, Germany, the second of 17 children of mathematics professor Johann Blasius Siegling. At age 12, young Johann was apprenticed to learn the cabinet maker's trade, and in 1806 the 15-year old journeyman left Erfurt working his way from Germany to Paris, where he arrived in May 1809. Paris proved to be the turning point in his life. In April 1810 he was introduced to the piano manufacturer Sebastian Erard and became an instrument maker. He remained with Erard for nine years, the last four in Erard's London establishment. In September 1819 Johann Siegling decided to go to America and arrived in Charleston in November 1819.

Siegling was the model of a successful German immigrant. Within days he established himself at No. 53, at the Corner of Broad and King streets next to the Guard House, and began advertising the repair and tuning of various musical instruments. Emphasizing his cosmopolitan background, he promised to satisfy the most discriminating customers. Charleston's first music house (The Siegling Music House) was thus established. In 1823 Siegling married Marie Schnierle, daughter of fellow carpenter Johann Michael Schnierle from Württemberg, and became a U.S. citizen the following year (6 Dec 1824). The business was very successful. It remained in business and in the family until 1970 (151 years). At one point Siegling had even opened a branch In Havana, Cuba known as Siegling & Vallotte.

Johann Siegling, was truly a citizen of both continents. He maintained close contact with his family in Germany, traveled to Europe with his children on several occasions and had several of them educated there (including his daughter, the composer Marie Regina Siegling) but he was also a true American. Both of his sons served in the Confederacy: Henry in the Artillery, Rudolph with the German Light Infantry, Hampton Legion. John Siegling was Captain of the German Fusiliers, Major on the staff of Gen. John Schnierle, and a member of the Board of Firemen. He was also a member of the German Friendly Society for 43 years and President of the German Freundschaftsbund for 15 years.
