The Death of Frederic Siegling and the Charleston Fire of 1838.
"One of my earliest recollections was the burning of Charleston. It occurred in the spring. The flames had broken out five blocks above our house and the house opposite was burning, but we made our escape without danger. My younger brother (Frederic), a child of five years, caught cold that night and died three weeks later. My uncle Frederick Schnierle perished in fighting the flames. The city has erected a beautiful monument to him in appreciation of his heroism.".
Excerpt from "Memoirs of a Dowager". (1908). Marie Regina Siegling LeClercq.
