Msgr. Ryan was born January 21, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a graduate of Dowling High School, Loras College, and Mount St. Bernard Seminary. He and his twin brother, Fr. Tom Ryan, were both ordained June 9, 1955. Msgr. Ryan served in the following parishes: Visitation, Assumption, Immaculate Conception as Associate Pastor and served All Saints, St. Anthony's, and St. Mary of Nazareth as Pastor. Msgr. Ryan also taught at Dowling High School from 1966 to 1972. In April of 1993 Rev. Ryan was bestowed the title of Monsignor. Msgr. Ryan faithfully served the Diocese of Des Moines until his retirement in 2008.
Msgr. Ryan had a great love for music, especially Irish songs. He was an avid dog lover, and was always seen with Tiny and later Snowball. A life time fan of sports, he enjoyed the Yankees, Notre Dame and Dowling High School. His greatest devotions in life were his reverence for Mary, The Mother of God, his respect for the priesthood, and service to his parishioners.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Lucy Ryan, sister, Sheila (Ryan) Fahrendorf, and brothers, Dr. Joseph Ryan, Rev. Thomas Ryan and Chaplain John Ryan. Survivors include his sister, Patricia (Ryan) Miller, 23 nieces and nephews, and a good number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
A visitation will be held at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2011 where a Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary of Nazareth, St. Anthony's, All Saints or Project Hope.
