Robert Lawrence "Bob" McGinnis, 78, of Danville, died Jan. 25, 2008, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 14, 1929, in Lincolnton, N.C., he was the son of Lawrence H. McGinnis and Jewel Justice. He lived most of his life in the Danville area. He was a self-employed mechanic and began racing on dirt tracks in the late 1940s. He was the modified co-champion at South Boston in 1965 and retired from racing in 1973. He was a member of the Virginia-Carolina Early Dirt Track Racers and the Old Timer's Racing Club.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Crabb McGinnis; a son, R. Lawrence McGinnis II; three daughters, Debra Jonas, Robin Wright and Janet Powell; a brother, Larry Justice; a sister, Vickye Farlow; six grandchildren. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Rowland.
Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
