Rachel's sister died following the birth of her fifth child in 1862 and, for whatever reasons, Rachel and Henry took the newborn girl into their home and raised her as their own. Twenty-six years later, the adopted niece was married with two little girls when she too died following birth of a third child. Rachel and Henry again opened their home and hearts and raised Lydia and Florence to adulthood.
Rachel and Henry never had children of their own but it is quite clear that their love of family was very strong. Rachel lived with her Grandniece, Lydia and husband, for many years after Henry had died.
