Mary Jane and Rollin Brown, her first husband, were dismissed from The First Congregational Church in Oberlin, OH, in the fall of 1837 to travel to the Iowa Territory (now Minnesota) as missionaries to the Ojibwe Tribe.
In 1840, the family returned to Huntington Twp., Lorain County, Ohio where it is believed that Rollin labored as a Methodist minister as well as a carpenter.
In 1849 Rollin and their older son, Samuel died in the cholera epidemic in Sandusky, OH. Mary Jane, with her remaining children, the youngest being 2 weeks old, went to Oberlin and lived with parents until she remarried.
