According to newspapers in Ventura County & Madison County, Iowa, John died of a rattlesnake bite. The incidence of rattlesnake bites in Ventura County, some species of which quickly cause death, remains high to this day. Ironically, John had survived all the hardships of travel on wagon trains to get to Alameda County, California, where Katherine, very ill with cancer died. John & the children went on to Ventura County at her urging. It had been her dream for them to homestead land there. The couple along with many other members of their families had left Holmes County after the death of John's father, Samuel Allen Guiberson. Samuel was buried in Monroe Twp., Ohio where the families were living at the time. The wagon train consisted of over 500 men, women & children. John had planned a stop ahead of time in Madison County, Iowa. Madison County was part way to the destination of California. It was thought that this would give the younger children some growing time. Katherine, J.W. & some of the children resumed their trip to California around 1860. Various members of their families did not move on from Iowa. There were multiple Census conducted in Madison County from 1850 on. According to a Telegraph (see below)sent from Ventura County,John Warner Guiberson pastored the Methodist Episcopal Church in Madison County, Iowa. He also pastored the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ventura County, Cal. from March of 1873 (the same year that Ventura County was created from Santa Barbara County) until his untimely death in 1880.

DEATH BY A RATTLESNAKE BITE OF ONE OF THE PIONEERS OF MADISON COUNTY
Tuesday evening the following dispatch was received from Santa Paula, California, and will be read with regret by many of the citizens of Madison county, who were well acquainted with the gentleman who lost his life in the sad
manner telegraphed below. Rev. J. W. Guiberson was one of the pioneer citizens of Madison county, coming here many years ago from Ohio. For a number of years he occupied the pulpit in the M.E. Church in this city, leaving this place for the Pacific Coast, where he has since lived. The dispatch says:
Santa Paula, Ventura, Co., Cal. Aug. 16--Rev. J. W. Guiberson, who has held many offices of trust in this State, and who was a pioneer of this county, was bitten by a rattlesnake yesterday at 9:30 a.m., from the effects of which he died at 6 o'clock last night. See the article at right in California newspaper.

It is said that he owned land, but I can find no record of it in either of the two counties in Cal. There is however, a record of land patent for John Warner Guiberson in Madison county, Iowa
