Catherine AKA Katherine, was the daughter of Elizabeth (Fivecoat) and Peter Knight & was 65 years old and 5 months at time of death. To ill with cancer to move on to Ventura County, California, she remained in Alameda County with her son, (a picture posted of him on his Interment)Dr. Simon Peter Guiberson. She urged her husband & children to go on with their plan to clear land in Ventura County for a homestead. It had been Catherine's dream for the family to have their own land in California. They had left Ohio with the California wagon train, consisting of 500 men, women and children. The journey was a difficult one. To save the animals for the river crossings, most people would walk. Animals died & supplies often ran out. Over one thousand deaths had occured on the trail (see article at right) by the year 1850. Some members of the Rizor & Fivecoat families were also on the wagon train. They stopped and stayed for some time in Madison County, Iowa, where they helped found the town of Winterset.
By 1853, Abraham Rizer (Catherine's stepfather) had moved a short distance away to Marion County, Iowa. Catherine was the half sister of my great great grandfather Samuel Rizor and was raised with him. Her mother Elizabeth (Fivecoat) Knight was married to Abraham Rizor (my 3rd great grandfather), after her first husband Peter Knight died around 1810.
