Funeral services for Mary Magdalene Young Allen, 89, were held September 20th, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Smithville, where she had been a member since 1938: Rev. Bill Robertson and Rev. Mark Bass officiated. Burial followed in Whorton Spriugs Cemetary.
Ms. Allen died September 17th, 2006, at NHC Healthcare in Smithville from eomplications of Lewy Body Disease. Except for a brief time in Detroit, she was a lifelong resident, of DeKalb County, where she was born on November 8th, 1916. Her parents were the late Charlie and Bertie Turner Young. She was married to Alonzo Allen on February 14, 1937. Before her marriage, Magdalene was a beauty shop owner. Later, she and her husband were owners and operators of Allen Ornamental Nursery, for which she was both a salesperson and a landscape designer.
Ms. Allen was preceded in death by her husband; Alonzo Allen; and by her parents and two brothers, Austin Young of Hendersonville, TN, and Bernice Young of Memphis. She is survived by her daughter, Polly Payne and her husband Joseph A. Payne, III of Woswell, Georgia; one granddaughter, Katherine Payne Hurst and her husband, Branen Hust of Rossville, Georgia; one great-grandchild, William Payne Hust; four step grandchildren, Laura Payne, Jenny Mangan (Timothy), Joseph Payne, IV (Kim), and Andrea Remke (Patrick); seven step-great-grandchildren, Tyler, Evan and Patrick Mangan, Bailey, Will, and Mae Remke, and Allison Payne. Also surviving area brother , Aaron Young of Elizabethtown, Tn; two sisters, Virgina Gill of Silver Point, and Marie Colvert of Smithville, and two sister-in-law, Evelyn Young of Hendersonville, T and Sofia Young of Memphis.
Serving as pallbearers were Gene Austin Young, Gary Gill, Steve Colvert, Tommy Webb, Beecher Taylor, and Joseph Payne, IV.
Dr. Charles Young Davis was the bagpiper for the processional and burial.
