Dewey Thomas Witten was born in Tazewell County on
April 29, 1898. He was the son of James Wilkerson Witten, who was lived in Canebrake, WV and was a merchant, and Minnie Wilson Witten, who was born on December 31, 1872 near Bland County, VA. Dewey's parents were married on March 9, 1897. Dewey had a twin brother, Cecil. He died in June 6, 1898. On August 12, 1899 Trixy Albert Witten was born and died on March 3, 1971 and is buried at the Hartwell Cemetery, near Canebrake, WV. Augustus Thorton Witten was born on March 22, 1900 and died in Canebrake, WV on November 29, 1962 and is buried at the Col. Witten Cemetery at Pisgah. Wallace Brown Witten was born on September 2, 1902. Another set of twins were born, Clara Lillian Witten and Meda Belle Witten arrived on January 7, 1904. Another set of twins were born on December 13, 1905, Paul and Pauline. Paul died on June 1906. According to living relatives, of the three sets of twins, only one twin per set lived to become an adult. Most of the family is buried at the Col. Wilkerson Witten cemetery, in the Pisgah area, of Tazewell County, Virginia.

Dewey married Ora Ellen Scott on June 28, 1924 in McDowell County, WV. According to the l930 McDowell County Census, Dewey was a coal miner in Canebrake, his wife Ora Ellen Scott Witten was a homemaker. They had five children, Sonya Sue, Richard L., Joanne, Meda, and Peggy Ellen. He and his family lived in a company owned house and he was a coal miner in Bishop. He loved fishing and watching the Big Creek Owls and Tazewell Bulldogs play football. At the time of his death, Dewey and his wife, Ora lived at Four Way in Tazewell, Virginia.
