Lance Corporal, 14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish). Son of Gavin Laurie Wilson and Alison Johnston Wilson, of Netherfield, Newport, Fife. Age 19.
Gavin was the youngest son in a family of six children. His home was at Netherfield, 47 Kilnburn, Newport, Netherfield being the Lanarkshire estate his father came from. His father founded the huge G L Wilson's department store in Dundee.
Gavin had attended Dundee High School and worked for Messrs Mackay, Irons and Co, Chartered Accountants in Dundee. He was a member of St Fillan's Boys' Brigade and joined up as soon as he was 18. In action in France he was in charge of a Lewis machine gun section. He was wounded at Arras, and died at a casualty clearing station in Northern France on 31st August 1918, aged 19. He is buried at Bac du Sud British Military Cemetery there.
His name is on the Dundee High School memorial plaque. His family erected a memorial window for him in St Fillan's Free Church in Newport. Sadly the window was destroyed when the church was demolished in 1979. His name is on the St Fillan's Church memorial plaque, now positioned in Newport-on-Tay Church.
