Anna D. Shimo June 11, 2004

Anna D. Shimo, 96, a resident of the East Mountain section for the past 71 years, died peacefully at home early Friday. She was the widow of John G. Shimo, who died Feb. 19, 1986.

Born in St. Clair, daughter of the late John and Helen Zatkovich Gera, she grew up in Taylor. She was a founding member, and until her death the oldest living member, of Holy Name of Jesus Church, where she was also a member and past president of the Altar and Rosary Society and a former choir member. She will be well-remembered for making homemade bread for the church bake sales, and was famous for her hand-loomed carpets.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a special caregiver to her grandson, David.

Surviving are three daughters, Rita Bega and Marge Sawicki, her caregivers, both of Scranton, and Dorothy Yeager, Havelock, N.C.; three sisters, Susan Hvasta, Lady Lake, Fla.; Mary Mraz, Trenton, N.J.; and Irene Kavulich, Taylor; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Katchmar and Margaret David; a brother, John Gera; and a grandson, Jerry Bega. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., with Mass at 11 in Holy Name of Jesus Church, East Elm Street and Froude Avenue.

Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call today, 5 to 8 p.m.
