Jimmy served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He came to Clovis in the early 1950s. On 14 May 1952, Jimmy married Zelma Dean Boyd at Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico. They lived in the Clovis area.
Jimmy was an artist and happened to be a close friend of Norman Petty. Jimmy recorded in Petty's Clovis studio. He was one of the first artist to record in the studio. Jimmy appears in the book The Day the Music Died: The Last Tour of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens on page 231. Information about the studio and Jimmy is available on the Internet.
Jimmy died at age 78. Services were at the First Baptist Church of Clovis, N.M., with Tom Rush officiating. Jimmy was a member of the church. Burial was in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Steed-Todd Funeral Home.
Zelma preceded him in death, dying July 23, 1994.
Survivors include two daughters, Terri Doerr of Portales, N.M., and Marilyn Patterson of Colleyville; two sons, James of Hereford and Phillip of Childress; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
