Velma Ruth Cory, 82, of Amarillo died Sunday, June 3, 2007.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Church of Christ at the Colonies with Dick Marcear officiating. Private family burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Mrs. Cory was born on July 25, 1924, in Amarillo to Harvey Allen and Adeline Roark. She was a graduate of Amarillo High School and had lived in Amarillo her entire life. She married Edwin Cory on Sept. 5, 1941 in Amarillo.

Ruth worked for many years as a Court Clerk for the Amarillo Police Department and also worked in the cafeteria at South Lawn Elementary School for a time. She and her husband were instrumental in helping start San Jacinto Church of Christ and also South Lawn Church of Christ. She was a member of Church of Christ at the Colonies at the time of her death.

She loved to read, play tennis, travel, crochet and play games. She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her family. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Carl Roark; and a sister, Estelle Snow.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheri Dean and husband Wallace and Sue Shields and husband Edward, all of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Tammie Cleeton and husband Ronald of Amarillo, Cory Shields and wife Nancy of Cedar Park, Zane Shields and wife Kimberlee of Lubbock, Faith Chenault and husband Gray and Elizabeth Phelan and husband Jon, all of Austin; and eight great-grandchildren, and one on the way.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.. today in the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to High Plains Children's Home P. O. Box 7448 Amarillo, TX 79114.
