Martha Alice Brown, daughter of Thomas E. Brown and Sophia D. Green, was born in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1863. Following the Civil War her family emigrated to Marion County, Oregon. Martha married John Thomas Porter on 4 November 1877 in Marion County, Oregon. For a number of years the couple lived in Eastern Oregon then moved to Yakima County, Washington. Martha died in 1903 giving birth to her 10th child.
