James Douglas Brown, son of Sophia D. Green and Thomas E. Brown was born in 1857 in Crawford County, Arkansas. Following the Civil War, he emigrated with his family to Marion County, Oregon.

Following his marriage he lived for a time in Morrow County, Oregon and moved to Yakima County, WA about 1912.
