Son of Theodore Polley and Hazel Wise. He attended Hunter School and was a 1940 graduate of Bloomington High School where he was active in football and wrestling. He was attending Indiana University when he entered the U.S. Army Air Corp as a mechanic in January 1941. He received hs mechanics training at Chanute Field, IL before he became an aviation cadet in July 1942. He took his primary training as a flier at Thunderbolt Field, AZ and his basic training at Mintor Field, AZ. In December 1943, he was transferred to the European Theater and was a pilot of a P-51 Mustang. He was reported missing in action on March 4, 1944 and was declared officially dead on September 20, 1945.

He was married to Margery Polley and they had a daughter Linda Ann, age eighteen months, who he never saw. She was born four days after he was reported missing.

He was in the U.S. Army Air Forces, 381st Fighter Squadron, 363rd Fighter Group-Service # O-748782.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. Despite what the marker says, his Mustang crashed, not in the North Sea, but in the English Channel. His body was never recovered.
