WALNUT COVE, NC ~ Mrs. Mattie Hazel Davis, 81, of Walnut Cove, died Wednesday at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Davis was born October 23, 1916, in Forsyth County to the late Solomon Augustus and Ivy Mabel Bostic McGee.

She was a charter member of New Birth Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher for 26 years. She was a graduate of Germanton High School and played on the all-star basketball team.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Davis; two sisters: Mary Edith McGee Stout and Ruby McGee Warren; and one brother, Walter (Bud) McGee.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia D. Arrington and Ivy D. Jones, both of Walnut Cove; three sons: John Walter Davis, Kenneth Alfred Davis, and Doug Davis, all of Walnut Cove; two sisters: Phoebe Troutt of Germanton and Rachel Lloyd of Walnut Cove; two brothers: John A. McGee of Rural Hall and Alton McGee and wife Linda of Pinnacle; 11 grandchildren: Thomas Wayne Arrington, Sherry Renee Arrington and husband, Greg, Terry Lee Arrington, Sr., Lisa D. Echols Holley and husband, Tim, Teresa Davis Wall, Johnny Lee Davis, Wendy Davis Foster, Karen Gwen Johnson and husband, Brian, Crystal Lynn Davis, LaRhonda Davis Smith and husband, Palmer, Lori Davis Thomas and husband, Dale; 8 great-grandchildren: Terry Lee Arrington, Jr., Thomas Lee Arrington, D.J. (Jake) Holley, Chrissie Davis and husband, Eric, Andrew Foster, Brandon Thomas, Angel Davis, J.D. Davis; one great-great-grandchild, Delana Whitworth.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at New Birth Baptist Church. Rev. Frances Blackburn and Rev. Jimmy Bowman will officiate. Entombment will follow in Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Burroughs Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Pat Arrington, 7525 Dennis Road, Walnut Cove, N.C. 27052.
