From page 438, same book: "On the 17th of January, 1863, a fire broke out in John Malone's building, on the south side of Front street, and the flames spread east and west, burning J. T. McGlashen's grocery, E. S. Kellogg's art gallery, C. Hensler's furniture store, J. Imerhoof's gunsmith shop, Huth's meat market and residence," etc. & etc., and was one of the worst fires to visit downtown ever, causing and estimated $50,000 damage."

Convert that today's dollars to see what this really meant.

OBITUARY: Beaver Dam Argus, Thursday, December 4, 1902, page 5.

DIED - MALONE - At his home on Middle street, in this city, Sunday, Nov. 30, 1902, of old age, John Malone, aged 73 years, 5 months and 6 days.

John Malone was born in County Clare, Ireland, June 24, 1829. He came to the United States in 1845, and to Wisconsin in 1852, locating in Beaver Dam. He engaged in the grocery business, in which he continued until burned out in January, 1863. The same year he began the manufacture of brick, which he followed for eight years. In 1876, he re-entered the grocery business, continuing, unil 1882, when he retired to his farm one mile from the city. In 1892 he moved to his residence in the Fourth ward, where he has since resided. During the Civil war, Mr. Malone had a commission as Lieutenant, and assisted in raising Co. A. 17th Wisconsin V. I. He was constable of the First ward for eight years; Deputy Sheriff of Dodge county for three years, and Supervisor of the town of Beaver Dam, for one year.

Mr. Malone was married March 4, 1851, to Mary McCabe, of County Cavan, Ireland; eleven children were born to them, nine of whom wih their aged mother, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. They are James E., Juneau; Michael A., Missoula, Mont., Rev. William D., Kenosha, Patrick H., Catherine E., George F., Rose A., Hannah M., of this city; and Mary A. (Mrs. John Baskfield) of Kilkenny, Minn., Ellen (Mrs. J. S. Hanrahan) died in 1898; John J. died in 1895.

Thus another pioneer has gone to his reward. Mr. Malone was a good citizen, courteous and obliging in his social and business relations, he will be sadly missed by his large circle of friends. The changes that the half century of his life in Beaver Dam have wrought can be faintly be imagined by the youth or the newcomer of today. They are as dreams - but to him they were realities.

The funeral took place at 10:30 this morning. Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Malone, a son of the deceased. He was assisted by Rev. F. J. Pettit, of Shullsburg, as Deacon and Rev. Wm. McCarthy of Mapleton, as Sub-Deacon, Father Hillenbrandt of Kenosha acted as Master of Ceremonies. The funeral oration was pronounced by Rev. R. Wall.
