Catharine Wells Lytle Carney, was the daughter of John Taylor Lytle and his first wife, Tabitha Morton Lytle. She was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee on 6 March 1814. She was a granddaughter of Captain William Lytle, who donated the land which became the town of Murfreesboro.
Catharine Wells Lytle married Legrand Hargis Carney on the 2nd of August 1831. Legrand was a very successful merchant in Murfreesboro, and served as the Mayor of Murfreesboro in 1837. The Carney family accumulated quite a fortune, and I believe paid taxes on over a half million dollars. This was considered a great deal before the war between the States. The Crest, their beautiful home, once stood on a rise several blocks north of the square between Maple and Spring Streets.
The Carneys opened their beautiful home during the skirmishes and Battle of Murfreesboro as a hospital for the wounded soldiers. Katherine Wells Carney was the President of the Confederate Aid Society. When the war came, reverses came and his property was gone, as most of the Southerners was. They sold their magnificent home and moved to the country.
Legrand Hargis Carney died on April 29, 1884, at the age of 76, in Rutherford County, Tennessee. His wife, Catharine Wells Lytle Carney, followed him in death on April 15, 1892. They are both laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery, in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee.
