OBITUARY

Kreiter
Saturday morning at 7 o'clock occurred the death of Charles Kreiter at his home five miles north of this city, on the Dubuque road. The deceased had been ailing since last fall and his demise was due to dropsical trouble and complications.

Mr. Kreiter was one of the best known farmers of that vicinity. He was a native of Merx Hausen, Gross Herzthum, Braunschweig, Germany born Aug. 15, 1827. He served in the Schleswig-Holstein war of 1748 [1848], and came to America in 1849 and located at Wheeling, W. Va. He was married Jan. 10, 1858, to Miss Mary Althaus, and they arrived in Davenport in September, 1865. For a time they lived in Davenport and then Mr. Kreiter engaged in farming on the Dubuque road. In 1871 he bought the W. H. Nagel farm and he had since made it his home. Besides his wife he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Chas. Lau, Henry W. Kreiter, Mrs. F. G. Hauer, Mrs. J. H. Wiess [Wiese], Charles Kreiter, John Kreiter and William D. Kreiter. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence on the Dubuque road, and the burial will be in Oakdale cemetery.

Charles was born in Merxhausen, Germany. He immigrated to the US in 1849 (via New York), traveling with William Kreiter. He moved directly to Wheeling, WV, where he married his wife Maria.
