Killed in action in the South Pacific.
Lt Jones was Killed in Action by Japanese forces. When his company was pinned down by sniper fire, he climbed onto a Sherman tank to direct it’s fire into a sniper’s position.
As he was directing fire, Jones was killed by sniper fire.
Jones was a well respected officer. He would play his guitar and sing country western songs during off duty hours with fellow marines. Hence the nickname Hillbilly.
