Daniel Guy Johnson Sr., 86, went home to be with the Lord in Klamath Falls on Oct. 20, 2010.
Dan was born on July 28, 1924, in Ainsworth, Neb., to Ruth and Frank Johnson.
He was raised in the Sand Hills of Nebraska, attended a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through nine and went to Ainsworth High School.
Dan worked at a dairy to put himself through school.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1944, was seriously injured at Iwo Jima and recuperated in Guam for several months before being transferred to the Klamath Falls Marine Barracks to finish recuperating from his injuries. He received the Purple Heart medal for his actions on Iwo Jima.
Dan met the love of his life, Thelma Swift, while stationed at the Klamath Falls Marine Barracks. They were married on Oct. 11, 1946, and just recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
He spent most of his life working for the U.S. Air Force as a civilian at Kingsley Field for 27 years, receiving many awards. The one he appreciated most was the Meritorious Service Award.
Dan served as commander of the Disabled American Veterans in the 1950s. He was treasurer for many years for the Church of the Brethren and paymaster for 18 years for the Marine Corps League. He was also a member of Masonic Klamath Lodge No. 77, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Elks Lodge, and the Third Marine Division of Oregon.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma; daughter, Dianna (Steve) Baker; sons, Dan Jr. and Ezekiel; extended family, Dan (Tina) Hall; grandchildren, Steve (Melanie) Baker and Amber Baker; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Ana and Talia Baker; sisters, Ruth Wallace and Eliza (Don) Rzeszotarski; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ruth Johnson; in-laws, Edgar and Geneva Swift; two daughters, Dana and Dawne Johnson; two granddaughters, Misty and Melanie Baker and grandson, Beau; brothers Frank and Chester Johnson, and sisters, Johanna Johnson and Sarah Furrey.
Dan was a quiet-spoken and loving person. His wife and family were his whole life. He was a Marine to the end "Semper Fi."
