Helen Emilia Ara, 83, of Gonzales, TX, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2010, in Gonzales. She was born July 28, 1927, in Gonzales County, TX, to Anton and Emilia Marek Havel. She married George Michael Ara on April 14, 1952, at St. James Catholic Church in Gonzales, TX.
Helen worked for the telephone company after graduating high school until she married and became a full time homemaker for her husband and family. She was the Rock of Gibraltar for her family, yet she was very kind, gentle and loving. She was an excellent cook and to the delight of her family she specialized in chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and her German chocolate cakes were celebrated throughout the area. She enjoyed learning how to cook Lebanese food for her husband. Outside the home Helen was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was active in the St. James Catholic Church Altar Society. She was not afraid of hard work, if she was not caring for her family’s needs at home Helen would often volunteer to assist her husband with the business at Ara Brothers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, George Michael Ara, Sr. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Elaine Ara, and husband Elvin Randell of Austin, Mary Katherine McNabb and her husband Scott, and Sandra Jo Johnston all of Gonzales, sons, George Michael Ara, Jr., and James Anthony “Bubba” Ara both of Gonzales, sisters, Rosemary Mikes of Yoakum and Betty Phillips of New Braunfels, brother, Anton Havel and his wife Lillian of Gonzales, grandchildren, Cole Johnston, Bryn McNabb, Laurn Randell and Audra Randell. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday December 23, 2010 in St. James Catholic Church in Gonzales with Fr. Paul Raaz officiating. Interment will follow in the Gonzales Hermann Sons Cemetery. Pallbearers: Scott McNabb, Elvin Randell, Cole Johnston, David Havel, Robert Phillips and Dennis Vinklarek. Honorary pallbearers: St. James Altar Society, Kathryn Hastings, Sylverta Jones and the staff at Texan Nursing and Rehabilitation. Memorials may be made to the St. James Altar Society. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
