GONZALES -- George Michael Ara Sr., 81, of Gonzales, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000.

He was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Gonzales, to the late Michael and Helen Macron Ara. He was owner of Ara Pecans in Gonzales and a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the DAV, VFW and American Legion. He was a member of the Pecan Growers Association of Texas and Oklahoma, the National Pecan Shellers Association, Hermann Sons Lodge and South Texas Old Timers Baseball Association.

Survivors: wife, Helen Emilin Havel Ara; daughters, Mary Katherine McNabb and Sandra Jo Johnston, both of Gonzales and Patricia Elaine Randel of Austin; sons, George Michael Ara Jr. of Gonzales and James Anthony ''Bubba'' Ara of Addington, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: parents; and four sisters and brothers.

A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church.

Burial will be at Gonzales Hermann Sons Cemetery. Seydler-Hill Funeral Home, Gonzales,
