A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 4, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. K, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He claimed he suffered sunstroke and heat exhaustion the day after the battle of Antietam. He was detailed as a teamster on October 31, 1862, appointed regimental teamster December 1, 1862, and was still in that status in April 1863. He further claimed he was ruptured February 5, 1863, when the horse he was riding stopped short and threw him against the pommel, injuring his left testicle. He honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
He moved to Illinois in 1864 and, in 1880, lived in Princeville, Peoria County, where he died of urinary tract disease that sounds like prostate trouble. In 1891, Julia applied for a widow's pension from Pennsylvania.
