Daughter of Daniel & Magdalena (Schott) Hammer, wife of 1) Jacob Givens, m. June 4, 1857, 2) William T. Lair, m. Aug. 28, 1871, & 3) 2nd wife of Solomon Bliss, m. Nov. 19, 1878.

Mrs. Susan Hammer was born in York County, Pennsylvania, Nov. 24, 1838, and died in Princeville, Ill., on July 10th, 1908, at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 16 days.
Her parents, Daniel and Magdelena Hammer, lived and died in Pennsylvania. In 1857 she was married to Jacob Givens, who died in Kewanee, Illinois, February 18, 1869. To this union were born three children, only one of whom survive, Ella, wife of George McGinnis of Princeville. The other two, Josephine and Jacob, died in infancy.
Her second marriage was to Wm. Lair of Princeville, on the 28th of August, 1871, who died April 5th, 1877. On November 18th, 1878, she was married to Solomon Bliss of Princeville, who died September 14th, 1896.
She and her first husband moved from Pennsylvania to Princeville in 1864 the first time, and after moving to and fro a number of times she finally settled in Princeville in 1869, and was a resident here till her death.
Particulars as to the time and circumstances of her conversion are somewhat vague, but it would seem that under the pastorate of Rev. S. Brink she united with the Princeville ME Church, of which she remained a member till she passed away to her reward.
Quite a number of years ago her health began to fail. Two years ago, a stroke hastened the end and she patiently waited until God should call her to himself.
She was a model housewife and mother. With a kind spirit did she minister to those dependent upon her. Of a very sociable disposition, fond of company, her home was open to all her friends, of whom she had very many. She was a lover of the church and a faithful attendant until bodily weakness made it impossible for her to longer enjoy that privilege. God is rapidly calling his saints home from this community, and we enroll among the number this godly woman, who faithfully filled the niche assigned to her, God now having provided some better place for her.
She is survived by four grandchildren: James and William McGinnis, Mrs. Beulah Williams and Mrs. Susie Renegar; and six great-grandchildren: Harold, Eugene and Frederick Williams, and Ralph, Clede and Lucilla McGinnis.
Among the relatives who survive is a brother, Henry Hammer, of this place, and who is now the only surviving member of a family of eleven children, six brothers and five sisters.
The funeral services were held on Sunday, July 12, at 3 p.m., from the ME Church, Rev. N.J. Brown conducting the service.
