Mrs. Doris Hagin Newsome

Mrs. Doris Hagin Newsome, age 86, died Tuesday at Gentilly Gardens Senior Care Facility in Statesboro after being in hospice care for the past six months. She was born on May 3, 1929, the daughter of the late James Dewey and Ina McElveen Hagin. The Effingham native graduated in 1946 from Marlow High School and received a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education for State Teacher’s College (now Georgia Southern University) in 1950.

Doris was a much beloved elementary school teacher at Sprague Elementary in Garden City and then at King Springs Elementary in Smyrna, Georgia. She resided in Garden City for many years with her family and later moved to Smyrna Georgia. She was an active and faithful member of Smyrna First Baptist Church. She was a very compassionate and caring person who loved helping others.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joel Newsome; two brothers, William Hagin and Durelle Hagin and her son, Wendell Newsome.
Surviving is her daughter Kay Newsome of San Antonio Texas, a brother Hugh Russell Hagin of Statesboro; three granddaughters, Ashley Newsome and Kailey Newsome both of Woodstock Georgia and Natalie Reeves of San Antonio, Texas; and a great granddaughter Macie Newsome also of Woodstock Georgia.

The family will receive visitors on Monday June 15, 2015 from 10:00am until the funeral hour. Funeral services will be at 11:00am in the chapel of joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

Interment will be in the Lanes Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Smyrna First Baptist Church 1275 Church Street, Smyrna GA 30080 or the Alzheimer’s Association.
