Leon Oscar Gendron was the son of Patrick R and Lila Jane (Lagro) Gendron. He was born May 20 1943 in Richford, Vermont.

-------------

Leon Gendron, who ran Leon's Diner in Enosburg Falls for about a decade, died in a car crash Christmas Day in Richford.

"He was caring, lovable," said Kathy Berger, who worked for Gendron at the diner and last year opened a new eatery at the Main Street location. "He was the boss, but he wouldn't tell the girls what to do. I used to say, ‘Leon, you've got to be the boss. You've got to put your foot down.' ... He was a great boss."

Gendron, 68, of Richford was driving along a slick section of South Richford Road on Sunday night when his vehicle went off the road and struck a tree, Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Underwood said.

Gendron, the lone occupant in the vehicle, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Underwood said. Richford fire and rescue workers extricated Gendron from the vehicle and transported him to the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, where he was pronounced dead.

Police responded to the crash at about 11:54 p.m. Sunday, Underwood said. He said Tuesday morning that police are investigating the crash, and do not suspect Gendron was intoxicated when his vehicle left the road.

When Gendron retired from running the diner in May 2010, Berger opened the Kit Kat Diner in its stead. Berger, 58, said Gendron came into the eatery Christmas morning, kissed her on the cheek and left to visit his sister in Isle La Motte.

Berger said she did not know where Gendron had been traveling from before the crash, but that he had family and a camp in Richford.

"I can't say nothing bad about him," she said.
