Halan Linwood Estep was born 30 May 1918 to Albert Joseph Estep (1877-1957) and his wife, Nellie Anne Campbell (1880-1961) at Big Creek in Logan County WV. He was their second son and eighth of their nine children.

When Harlan was 19, he married his neighbor, Helen Loise Mays, daughter of Manson Mays and his wife, Niza Bell Thornhill on 26 November 1937. He had lied on his marriage register listing himself as 21. Harlan was a travelling salesman, and by the 1940 US Census, they were still married but he was living with his parents. They divorced soon afterwards. They didn’t have children.

Near the end of World War 2, Harlan married for a second time at age 26 to Bessie Irene Gore, daughter of Charles Mobley Gore and Genevieve Jemima Walker Gore, and was 24 years old. Their 17 May 1945 wedding was performed by Reverend Robert H Prichard in Logan, Logan County WV. After some time, the marriage dissolved, and they were divorced. During their time apart, Bessie became a Licensed Practical Nurse and moved to nearby Chapmanville.
Realizing separation was a mistaken, Halan and Bessie married for a second time on 31 October 1958 at his parent’s home in Big Creek with his older brother, Reverend Frank G Estep officiating. He was 40 and she was 37. They lived together in Chapmanville. Four months later while driving to work along Route 10 (WVSR10) near Justice Addition going towards the city of Logan, Bessie lost control of the vehicle. On 19 February 1959 at 6:00 a.m., the car plunged into the Guyan River and turned upside down, trapping Bessie inside. The accident broke her neck and fractured her skull, and she died from drowning. She was 38 years old. Her parents buried her next to her younger sister who had died in 1947.

In 1962, 42-year-old Harlan married Anna Podunovac Lyons, daughter of Mike Podunovac and Pearl McNeely living nearby in Ethel, WV, and widow of Marvin Thomas Lyons. She was 38. His brother, Frank also performed this marriage. The marriage was not successful as Harlan had begun drinking after Bessie’s death. The couple separated and Harlan moved back into his parents’ home at Big Creek.

On 25 August 1965, Albert found his son in agony and discovered Harlan had attempted suicide by drug poisoning. He was rushed to Guyan Valley Hospital in Logan and died four hours later at 1:05 a.m. on the 26th. He was buried in the small family plot at the back of their family farm at Big Creek.
