Richard L. Doak, 84, of Stover, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, of cancer.
He was born Dec. 24, 1922, the second of seven children to Edgar Parker and Grace Bryan Tarwater Doak. On Aug. 19, 1944, in Tyler, Texas, he was married to Virginia Ray McClesky, who survives.
Mr. Doak was attending the University of Missouri-Columbia, when he volunteered to serve in the Army in World War II. He received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture after the war. He served his country again as an infantry platoon leader with the 7th Division, 31st Regiment (Polar Bear), Charlie Company, during the Korean War. He received the Silver Star for gallantry in combat and the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He was modest about his military service.
After his tours of military service, he returned to Missouri. He later received a master's degree in education from MU. He was a teacher at Payne School, near Centralia. He was an elementary principal in Hallsville, Jefferson City and Versailles. He retired from teaching in 1985. An avid sports fan, he loved Mizzou football and Cardinals baseball. All of his children graduated from MU.
Mr. Doak's early retirement allowed him to work on his farm and pursue his lifelong past-time, raising and showing Southdown sheep. Many of his closest friends he met in the sheep business. He was known for his quiet personality and dry wit. He was in his element in the sale and show ring.
Also surviving are three sons, David Doak, of Arlington, Va., Mitch Doak, and his wife, Sherry, of Liberty, and Mike Doak, and his wife, Mendy, of Lee's Summit; a daughter, Pam Gray, and her husband, Rich, of Barrington, Ill.; four brothers, Bill Doak, of Vandalia, Doug Doak, of Ames, Iowa, John Doak, of Bowie, Texas, and Dr. R.S. Doak, of Lakewood, Colo.; a sister, Dottie Thompson, of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and three granddaughters, Natalie Gary, Hayley Gray and Emily Doak.
He was predeceased by a brother, Jim Doak.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Lee's Summit. Private burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The family will receive friends from noon until service time Saturday at the church.
