Dr. Roger "Steve" Doak, 72, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, in Lakewood, Colo.

A memorial service is planned for in the spring at Gallatin, where his ashes will be buried in the family plot.
He was born Oct. 7, 1939, on a farm near Jameson, the youngest of seven children of Grace Tarwater Doak and Edgar Parker Doak.

The family later moved to Eagleville and then Olathe, Kan., where he started school. After his father's death in 1946, the family again relocated to Hallsville, where Roger attended school through the seventh grade. He and his mother then moved to Columbia, and he graduated from Hickman High School in 1957 as a National Merit Scholar. He graduated with distinction from the University of Missouri in 1961 and obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from Saint Louis University in 1964 with summa cum laude honors. He then completed his residency in radiology, and after becoming board certified, practiced in Dodge City, Kan., Denison, Texas, and Boulder, Colo.

At a very early age, when most boys were playing with tractors, he learned to operate a real one, working in the fields, plowing and harvesting hay alongside his older brothers. He loved doing it and could put in a full day's work. While living on the farm, he was active in 4-H and exhibited a grand champion lamb at the American Royal.

After moving to Columbia, he worked as a newspaper boy for the Columbia Tribune, where his mother was a proofreader for 20 years. At age 15, his brother Douglas taught him to shear sheep, which he continued through college, working weekends and vacations. Earnings from shearing paid a substantial part of his college and medical school expenses. In high school, he also made money as a golf caddy, carhop and fry cook.

Dr. Doak was widely read and kept abreast in all areas of medicine. He also pursued a varied assortment of activities: spelunking, scuba diving, flying his own plane, gliding in his glider, sailing his HobieCat and skiing. In later years, after taking lessons, he enjoyed going dancing. Photography was a passion, as well as listening to music.

He is survived by his two children, Alan Doak of Boulder and Eva Doak Wilson of Seattle, Wash.; three brothers, William T. Doak of Vandalia, John E. Doak of Bowie, Texas, and Paul Douglas Doak of Ames, Iowa; one sister, Dottie Doak Thompson of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers James and Richard; and nephews Mark and Mitchell Doak.
