OF FRENCH AND ENGLISH ANCESTRY

DISTANT COUSIN OF PRESIDENTS FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT AND ULYSSES S. GRANT

A BIOGRAPHY OF REBECCA DELANO CHURCHILL, by Laurence Overmire (8th great grandson), genealogist and family historian, updated August 2020:

Rebecca Delano, was born in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts about 1657, the daughter of immigrants Phillippe de la Noue (Philip Delano) and his second wife Mary Pontus. Rebecca's father was a French Huguenot, who joined the Separatist Church at Leyden. In 1621, at 19 years old, he sailed for Plymouth Colony on the ship "Fortune," arriving just after what has come to be known as the First Thanksgiving.

On Dec. 28, 1686, at Plymouth, Rebecca married John Churchill, the son of immigrants John and Hannah (Pontus) Churchill. John's mother Hannah was the sister of Rebecca's mother Mary. Therefore, Rebecca and her husband John were first cousins.

John and Rebecca had 5 children:
1) Elizabeth (b. 7 Oct. 1687, m. Capt. Joel Ellis)
2) Rebecca (b. 29 Aug. 1689)
3) John Jr. (b. 20 Dec. 1691)
4) Sarah (b. 10 Feb. 1695)
5) Hannah (b. 27 Apr. 1697)

In 1688, John and Rebecca were admitted as members of the Plymouth Church and in 1689, John was admitted as a freeman.
