William Van Bergen Curtis was the son of Newman and Maria Van Bergen Curtis. He married Salena Dodge on Sept 28, 1851 in New York. They moved to Rock County, Wisconsin in early 1850's. They moved to Bremer County, Iowa in the spring of 1855 and settled on a farm in Section 38, Dayton Twp. They, also owned land in Fayette County, Iowa. They retired in Ceder Falls, Iowa and were buried in a Cedar Falls, Iowa Cemetery. Their children were: Herman (b. 1853), Harriet Louisa (b. 1855), Anna Maria (b. 1858) and Newman Francis (Frank) (b. 1859).

The siblings of William Van Bergen Curtis were: Catherine, Lyman, Ann, Harriet, Newman, John, Martha, Edwin, Eleanor, Lora D., Mary, Henry, and Wilbur.
