Services held for Samuel Burnquist, 87, Tuesday, Dec. 28
Funeral services were held for Samuel A. Burnquist, long-time Dayton resident Tuesday, December 28 at 1:30 p.m. in the Dayton Methodist Church. Rev. Donald Artman conducted the service with the Carson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
During the service a vocal selection was presented by Mr. Richard Will accompanied by Mrs. Carl Benson. Caring for the flowers were Mrs. Glen Beckman, Mrs. Mildred Vegors and Mrs. Roberta McIlvain. Bearers were Ralph Bowman, Van Gabrielson, Dean Jordan, Leo Luhmann, Ivan Skoglund and Robert Young. Interment was held in the Dayton Cemetery, with masonic rites at the graveside.

Samuel A. Burnquist, son of the late Caroline and Samuel Burnquist, was born in Dayton, Iowa on April 17, 1878 and passed away at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Dodge on December 24, 1965 at the age of 87 years.
He attended the Dayton schools, Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He also took business training at the Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines.
Mr. Burnquist was employed as manager of the clothing department in the Boston Store in Fort Dodge for a time as a young man. There he met Miss Bessie Hawksworth of Fort Dodge. They were married November 6, 1899. The couple observed their 66th wedding anniversary last month.
In 1901, Mr. and Mrs. Burnquist established their home in Dayton and he entered partnership with the late C.V. Lundberg in a general store known as Burnquist and Lundberg's. After forty years in the store he traveled as a public relations man in Iowa for Standard Brands Co. for 15 years before his retirement.
Mr. Burnquist maintained his membership in civic, social and fraternal organizations throughout his life. He was a member of Dayton Methodist Church.
He was chairman of the board of directors of the Iowa State Bank and Trust Co. in Dayton and a director of KQTV in Fort Dodge. He was an active member of the Dayton Community Club, Dayton Golf and Country Club, Fort Dodge Elks Club also was a member of Knights of Pythias and the Woodman Lodge as long as they were active in Dayton.
Mr. Burnquist was honored at a special dinner and program in August, 1965, in recognition of 65 years of membership in the local masonic lodge. He was also a member of the Consistory in Fort Dodge and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Des Moines. He was also a member and past Patron of Acorn Chapter Order of Eastern Star. In past years he had served on the town council and fire department.
Mr. Burnquist was privileged to maintain good health and to live a full and active life. He made an almost daily trip to the business district and attended various meetings until his recent hospitalization.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie; one brother, B.B. Burnquist of Fort Dodge; two nephews, William Burnquist of Fort Dodge, Boyd Burnquist of Sao Paulo, Brazil; two nieces, Mrs. N.J. Batchelder of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Mrs. Howard Borgerding of Imnaha, Oregon, other relatives and a host of friends.
