Born in LIppe-Detmold, Germany.

Mr. Brandt's first wife Mary died in Illinois after which he married a widow Caroline (Kortemeier) Legel on 7 Feb 1882 in Freeport, Illinois. Soon thereafter they moved to Turner County, South Dakota. Ludwig and Caroline had three children together: Edward H. Brandt (1882-1962), Margaret Elizabeth (Brandt) Bartelt (1885 - ??), and Louis M. Brandt (1890-1968).
