born Caroline Friederike Charlotte to Heinrich and Charlotte (Daake) Kortemeier in the village of Varenholz, Lippe Detmold, Germany. Caroline came to the U.S. with her parents and siblings in 1866. On 29 April 1867, at age 19, she married John G. Legel (age 40) in Dubuque, Iowa. After his death she married Ludwig Brandt on 7 Feb 1882 in Freeport, Illinois. Shortly thereafter they moved to Turner County, South Dakota. Caroline had five children with her first husband: William H. Legel (1869 - 1915), Carrie (1870 - 1956), Minnie (b,d abt 1872), Henry (1869 - 1914), and Amelia (1878 - 1970). She also had three children with Mr. Brandt. (Their names are listed in his biography.)
