Althea G. Whaley passed away Wednesday morning, July 27, 2011 at her home in Athens, Ohio with her family at her bedside.


Althea was born in Jacksonville, Ohio on June 20, 1915. She was the daughter of the late George and Sarah Ellen Taylor Bernard. She spent her early years on Dutch Ridge and later moved to Guysville where she and her late husband, Raymond, raised their family. She then moved to Athens where she continued to care for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family was her primary calling in life. Althea was employed at the old Athens State Hospital for many years where she was a licensed practical nurse.

She was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church and the Albany Chapter 558 Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by her son, Roger (Joyce) Whaley, of Parkersburg, West Virginia; her daughters- Cheryl (Kenneth) Ewing and Judy Algeo, both of Athens; her grand-children- Jennifer Whaley of Parkersburg, Heather (Heath) Clemons of The Plains, Melissa (David) Hollingsworth of Beaverton, Oregon, and Dylan and Christopher

Whaley of Parkersburg; her great-grandchildren- Kenadi, Taylor and Dru Clemons, and Nicholas Hollingsworth.

She is also survived by her brothers- Robert (Mildred) Bernard of Athens and Jack (Maxine) Bernard of Franklin, Ohio, and a sister-in-law, Betty Bernard of Dayton, Ohio. Althea also leaves many nieces and nephews and many loving and caring friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Whaley; her son, Terry Whaley; a grandson, Chuck Algeo; a son-in-law, Bill Algeo; her sister, Gertrude Morgan and five brothers- Ernest, Harvey, Arnold, Herman, and Vern.

Funeral Services were held at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Rev. Joel Harbarger officiating. Burial was in Athens Memory Gardens. Albany Chapter 558 O.E.S. held at the funeral home.
