Bertha Marie Tardy

Mrs. Bertha Marie Tardy, of Winona, died of a gunshot wound Tuesday, July 16, 1996, at Tardy Furniture Company in Winona.

Mrs. Tardy was owner and operator of Tardy Furniture Company since 1985. She graduated from Winona High School and was also a graduate of the New York School of Interior Design. She was an active member of Moore Memorial United Methodist Church where she formerly served as chairperson of the finance committee for five years, as a teacher of children and youth, as chairperson of its Commission on Education, and as treasurer of the United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Tardy was a past a president and member of the board of directors, and chairperson of the selection committee for the Montgomery County Habitat for Humanity. She was a past treasurer and president of the Montgomery County Economic Council and was a member of Leadership Mississippi. Named 1989 Retail Person of the Year, she also served as president of the Downtown Merchants Association in which she spearheaded obtaining grant money to renovate Downtown Winona.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 19, at Moore Memorial United Methodist Church with Bro. David Carroll and Bro. Gladwin Clark officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Winona.

Mrs. Tardy is survived by her husband, Thomas Walter Tardy, Jr. of Winona; one daughter, Roxanne Miller Ballard of Winona; and one grandson, Jeremy Ballard of Winona.

Active pallbearers were Dr. Jan Bailey, John Sumner, Jim Kidd, George Harris, Jr., James Middleton, Ed Forsythe, Sandy Jackson, and Bill Graves.

Honorary pallbearers were Ellis Hart, and George Harris, Sr.

Lee Funeral Home of Winona was in charge of arrangements.
