Howard Beard, 85, of 1827 6th Ave., Rock Island, died this morning at Oak Glen Nursing Home, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Crummy Funeral Home, Viola. The Rev. Daryl Fansler, pastor of the Viola United Methodist Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Viola Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Beard was born March 29, 1893 in Viola, the son of Isaac and Emma Wharton Beard. He received his education in Viola schools, and moved to Rock Island about 20 years ago. Prior to that he had lived in Omaha, Neb., where he was the business administrator at the Omaha Building and Loan Co. He later was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring 13 years ago.
He was in the Army during World War I, serving in France.
Surviving are several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
