Former teacher Bill Battershell dies at 72
HENNING - Longtime area teacher and coach Bill H Battershell, 72, of Henning died at 10:45 pm Sunday (Oct 8, 1995) at United Samaritans Medical Center, Logan campus, Danville.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at Mittendorf-Calvert-Morgan Funeral Home, 2400 Galen Drive, C.
Mr Battershell was born June 10, 1923, at Henning, a son of Roy and Florence Fairchild Battershell. He married Ruth Rose in 1953 at Henning. He later married Patricia Campbell in 1981 at Champaign.
Survivors include three sons, Tom Battershell of Mahomet and Tim Battershell and Chris Battershell, both of Champaign; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley Carter of Sarasota, Fla, and Sonna Lou DeLois of Plainfield, Ind.
Mr Battershell graduated from Henning High School in 1941. He received a bachelor's degree in 1949 and a master's degree in 1952, both from the University of Illinois.
He was a teacher for 35 years and also was a guidance counselor and athletic coach. He began teaching at Danville and then taught at Monmouth.
In 1967 he came to Champaign and taught social studies and American History at Edison Middle School. He also coached basketball, football and track.
He retired in 1985.
Mr Battershell served as a corporal in the US Air Force, 421st Night Fighter Squadron, in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 733.
He also was a member of the GAR-Men at the UI and Moose Lodge 1288 and was a 14th degree Mason. He was a member of the Champaign Republican Party and was a precinct comitteeman.
